Celestial Electric By AM & Shawn Lee.

Cult LA singer-songwriter AM and cult London beatmaster Shawn Lee share a taste for the outré, so it seemed only natural that they should collaborate on Celestial Electric.

Sweetened with things like glockenspiel and marimba, along with a warehouseful of obscure analogue keyboards, Lee's rhythm tracks provide subtly scuttling beds for AM's songs and sweet soul falsetto: the desolate edge it lends to "Lonely Life" is the making of the song.

Together, these outsider talents create an engaging blend of slinky Tropicalia, soulful Bacharachia, and enigmatic Euro-thriller themes. Its snaky shuffle and lowering synth pad make "Dark into Light" a standout track, and "Somebody Like You" has genuine pop charm, while their lovely version of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' "Jackie Blue" is a guilty pleasure deluxe.

Barr Brothers By The Barr Brothers.

The Barr Brothers is a name you’ll want to remember, something that won’t be too difficult after listening to their self-titled debut album. Brad and Andrew Barr have been playing music together since they were kids, but it wasn’t until Brad’s chance meeting with Sarah Page that The Barr Brothers began to materialize. Page was playing harp in her apartment wall, and Barr was secretly learning the melody. He knocked on her door and ended up playing it for her. Soon, their friend and multi-instrumentalist Andres Vial was brought in to lend his wide array of expertise to the outfit, playing keyboards, bass, vibes, percussion, and singing. Their tremendous talents shine through in this album and capture an Americana folk that keeps up with today’s demands for a fresh sound.
The album was cut in a boiler room in Montreal and includes guest musicians Andres Vial, Miles Perkin (Lhasa DeSela), Elizabeth Powell (Land of Talk), Nathan Moore, Jocie Adams (The Low Anthem) and Emma Baxter.

The Tarnished Gold by Beachwood Sparks.

The LA quartet Beachwood Sparks are a band out of time, in two senses. First, their third album comes the best part of 11 years since their last. Second, their music is so tied to the southern California of the late 60s and early 70s that it's hard not to imagine the songs as outtakes from the Easy Rider soundtrack. Curiously, though, that makes them feel more current than they did first time around: Beachwood Sparks are bathed in same the hazy, tinted nostalgia that powers Tumblr and Instagram. It helps, too, that Tarnished Gold is of a piece with their first two albums, but never a pale imitation. Earl Jean combines country rhythms with soft jangle of electric guitars, like the Byrds in their Clarence White era; Talk About Lonesome sounds like a ballad Neil Young wrote for Johnny Cash in 1972, then forgot about. The mariachi diversion No Queremos Oro is a little puzzling, but the rest's a summery shimmer of pleasure.

Forever So By Husky.

Surprisingly, Australian rockers Husky draw their name from their frontman: Husky Gawenda, who started playing music with cousin and keyboardist Gideon Preiss when they were kids in Melbourne, Australia. They went their separate ways musically as they were growing up, but reconvened in 2008 along with bassist Evan Tweedie and drummer Luke Collins and started playing small shows around the city.

Fast forward a few years and they’re opening sold-out shows for The Head and the Heart in anticipation of the release of their debut album, Forever So, which will be out on July 10 via Sub Pop.

Husky recorded Forever So before Sup Pop had ever heard of them, on borrowed equipment in a bungalow behind a house Gawenda was renting. They ran extension cords through a garden into the main house. The record was also made without any help from a producer or any other outside influences.

“We wanted to have complete creative control over everything on the record,” says Preiss. "We weren’t trying to achieve an engineering masterpiece, but the heart and soul of the songs are in there.”

The result is a remarkable collection of affecting, mostly acoustic folk rock highlighted by Gawenda’s delicate vocals.
